Emerson in the boat, ready to go. In the background, you can see the giant sand and gravel piles, which men are shovelling into boats like this one and taking across the bay. |
This was the boat we were originally going to take. You can see how heavily they loat the boats, which are basically giant canoes, with an outboard motor in the back. |
Ready to go! I didn't pay extra for a life jacket for myself, figuring that basically I should just not fall into the lake. |
One of the traditional fishing boats, under human power. One of the hills of Kampala in the background.
Some of the interesting plants on the other side of the bay, in the swampy areas. These were 8 or 10 feet high, and all over.
We stopped at a tiny port on the other side of Murchison Bay.
Getting ready to get back in the boat....
And getting carried right in!
So many birds all around! This is a tree-ful on the swampy shore.
And some on rocks in the lake...
And a whole abandoned pier covered in these birds. I haven't yet been able to find a good birding book to help me identify what they all are.
The little boat-er!
And back to home port. This is our local vegetable and fish market in the background.
